If you are like most computer enthusiasts or just a fast paced individual, you'll want to speed up your computer as much as possible for improved productivity. Windows XP is loaded with performance options that you can control to speed up the time it takes for your computer to process and display data.
Begin by clicking on your Start button, then click on Control Panel, then System. Here, click on the "Advanced" tab, then select Settings button under Performance. At the Performance Options dialog box, you have the following four options:
- Let Windows choose what's best for my computer
- Adjust for best appearance
- Adjust for best performance
- Custom
With Option 1, Windows will automatically detect which settings are best suited for your computer. If you prefer a better visual experience, you can select option 2, but this is not recommended because it will drastically slow down your computer.
I personally recommend selecting option 3, Adjust for best performance. This will remove all of the new Windows XP visual effects such as window fades, slider effects, window animations, drop shadows on text and so forth. With option 4, you can select which visual effects you wish to keep or eliminate.
Keep in mind that these features can be switched on and off any time you wish, so if prefer to use your old settings just go back and select them.
